Thanks for taking the time out to talk to me about your new film, ‘Here Comes The Boom’. Here, J talks about what it was like working with the cast and crew on-set and how he got into the industry in the first place… Michael Trautmann about his role in ‘Here Comes The Boom’. The show is hosted by “Gorgeous” George Garcia, lead staff reporter John Morgan and producer Brian “Goze” Garcia.I recently got the chance to talk to J. PT) live from Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino’s Race & Sports Book. Radio broadcasts Monday-Friday at noon ET (9 a.m. “Here Comes the Boom” opens in theaters Friday. “A lot of people are complimenting me on my acting ability, and it’s kind of bittersweet, because I don’t know how I could possibly mess up being me,” DellaGrotte said. “Not because I said that, but because of my accent.” “I told Kevin I got bit hard, and he laughed at me,” the 37-year-old trainer said. Kevin wanted to show that because that’s real.”ĭellaGrotte, meanwhile, admits he might have caught the acting bug. That was one of Kevin’s themes in the movie … to show people what it’s like to go through the struggles of a young fighter or a fighter coming up in the amateur leagues. “Most of the movie was filmed in New England, and I truly believe that New England is a hub for mixed martial arts. A scene where James falls through the floor of the cage at a local show was familiar to DellaGrotte, whose Sityodtong gym in Somerville, Mass., produces dozens of fighters that compete on the local circuit. There also were scenes of mishaps that come with being an up-and-comer. So it was a full crew that made sure the fight scenes looked good.” Part of our role as people that have come from mixed martial arts and are firm believers in the sport – we all wanted to make sure this movie was accurately depicted. “They knew that having guys like me, Bas Rutten, Parsons, Wanderlei Silva, Rich Franklin, Joe Rogan – all these guys contributed to the movie. A who’s who of current and former fighters populated the movie and helped craft moments that would be believable to fans of the sport. In contrast, James strived to make the MMA scenes as real as possible. I grew up watching ‘The Fonz,’ and to watch ‘Happy Days’ and sit next to Henry on a movie set is surreal.” “What was amazing for me was just the experience of being around people like Henry and Salma and Kevin. “It wasn’t about being an actor or crossing over or making a ton of money,” DellaGrotte said. On set, he marveled at the discipline of James and lead actors Salma Hayek and Henry Winkler, whom he idolized as “The Fonz.” Kevin is a huge fan of the sport.”ĭellaGrotte, who’s guided such fighters as Kenny Florian, Patrick Cote, Marcus Davis and Jorge Rivera, plays himself in the movie and trains Scott Voss, James’ character, to become an MMA fighter. “It’s something he wanted to do for a long time,” DellaGrotte told Radio (“It wasn’t like I got a phone call out of nowhere. Years before, he’d spoken with James about the prospect of doing an MMA movie. DellaGrotte would go on to do a bit role in the James vehicle “Zookeeper,” and when the MMA-themed “Here Comes the Boom” went into production, he was suggested for the cast by longtime fight trainer Ryan Parsons, who served as a consultant on the film. Mark DellaGrotte’s relationship with Kevin James began in 2006 during a coaching stint on “The Ultimate Fighter 4.”Īfter a day on set, he and guest coach/UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre went to one of James’ comedy shows on the Las Vegas strip, and he chatted backstage with the actor and comedian.
